Hello folks! Happy Halloween! Welcome to Scorpio season! We entered Scorpio season last week on Tuesday, October 22nd. So, it’s officially spooky season, and Scorpio season graces us with reminders of our ancestors, heritage, and the dead. This is a ghostly time. 👻 In terms of magick, this is the time to harken back to your ancestors, for writers and creatives this also means creative ancestors (who inspires and influences your art?). I encourage you to set up an altar in honor of your ancestors. According to both Samhain and Día de los Muertos, this is a liminal time, when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest. Place images of your ancestors and leave offerings on your altar: food, drink, objects that belonged to the person/s. If you’re honoring your creative ancestors, place images of their work (paintings, books, etc.) on your altar. This is the best time to commune with your ancestors and if needed, ask them for help, guidance, or favors. But make sure you leave them offerings, before you ask for their help! This time is celebrated as Samhain (pronounced saw-wain), originated by the Celts (tribal people who occupied a huge swath of land in Europe, previous to Roman colonization). Our modern celebration of Halloween most likely came from Irish, Scottish, and British immigrants celebrating some version of Samhain. And, as I live in Southern California, I have to mention Día de los Muertos, which is a similar celebration of ancestors and the dead. And again, according to tradition this is the time when the dead are closest to us. Day of the Dead is typically celebrated Nov. 1st and 2nd, and Samhain begins on the evening of Oct. 31st and flows into Nov. 1st.
Scorpio season book recommendation: Exalted by Anna Dorn I couldn’t put this book down, it was the perfect mix of trite, fun, and did she just do that??? style drama. It’s also put out by an independent press (as a reminder that there’s more to the reading world than the Big Five publishers). Why this book for Scorpio season? The protagonist is a Scorpio with a dry wit who loves Winona Ryder and makes a living as an Instagram astrologer. (This book couldn’t be more up my alley.) Oh, and it takes place in Los Angeles and the Inland Empire, the two places I occupy on the regular. The writing is breezy and fun, and definitely worth your time. There is a slightly obvious “reveal” about midway through . . . but, it’s one of those reveals that you don’t exactly want revealed, if you get what I mean. In short, the bulk of the story is told from the dual perspectives of a young woman dreaming of being an actress in LA and a middle-aged lesbian in Riverside County suffering from alcoholism, mental health, and dating dilemmas. You’ll have to read it to see how they’re connected . . . 🦇 but I will warn you, as this book sounds like a romance, it’s most definitely not! Quick notes: - the Writing Coven is cancelled tomorrow, but we’ll return on Nov. 8th! This month has been real busy for me and I’m a little behind on work, so I’ll leave this months newsletter here ✌🏼 See you next month for Sagittarius season! I'll try to do a longer rundown of astrology next month, and post my usual recommendations again! Best, Demelza

Hello all and welcome to Pisces season! (And, sorry this one is so late, there’s a ton going on in March - if you haven’t heard, 2025 is an active year astrologically) I was not paying attention and didn’t realize Pisces actually floated in on February 18th (how Pisces of me), and we’re in Pisces season until the Spring Equinox on March 20th (also the beginning of Aries season) As it’s Pisces season, it’s time to get dreamy. Yes, the world (or, feels like it at least) is going to hell, so I’d...
